Our Technology

Benefits for Color. Benefits for the Environment.

Cypris Materials’ approach is eco-friendly while addressing the detrimental social, environmental, and health impacts that have long been associated with performance pigments.

30-60%
Of a traditional paint’s CO2 emissions come from the colorant.
Bio-inspired
Through millions of years of evolution, nature has found an efficient way to manipulate light, known as structural color, to create beautiful colors without the use of pigments or dyes.
Reduced Chemicals
Pigment and dye manufacturing creates toxic chemicals that end up in our products and persist even after the product’s useful life. CYPRIS SCC eliminates the need for these toxic pigments and dyes.
Reduced CO2
With pigments and dyes contributing a substantial amount to the carbon emission of formulated paint, the need to reduce or eliminate their use seems obvious.
Plant Based
CYPRIS structural color copolymer is made from 50% plant-based raw materials that are both renewable and sequester carbon as they grow.
Metal Free
Metallic finishes used to enhance packaging can be a challenge for automated sorting at recycling centers.  CYPRIS SCC is metal free avoiding sorting interference.

Endless Color. Endless Possibilities.

CYPRIS structural color copolymer can achieve a full color palette by mixing just Blue and Red copolymers. This unique blending model developed by CYPRIS Materials greatly simplifies supply chain logistics and the need for individual pigments to create specific colors. Referred to as “wavelength averaging”, this method unlocks a new color paradigm providing designers with a first-of-its-kind toolbox to meet customer needs.

Market Opportunities
Premium Packaging
Packaging is a key tool for brand owners to convey value and capture attention. In the case of luxury goods, the packaging can quickly become as important as its contents.
Consumer Electronics
Consumer electronics is a prime example of color driving consumer connection and choice. Top brands perform annual color refreshes to stay in step with consumer preference.
Automotive
As function drives form, automotive designers increasingly rely on color to differentiate their brand. The automotive industry has one of the most established pay-for-color business models to support consumer demand for unique colors to express their individual personality.
Security
To effectively combat counterfeiting, security features need uniqueness and complexity. CYPRIS structural color copolymer offers brand owners distinctive overt security features, easily layered with additional covert and forensic elements for a comprehensive security solution.
Sports Equipment
Sports, both individual and team-based leverage vibrant colors for performance expression. CYPRIS structural colors provide a dynamic perception, sought by sports equipment brands for communicating cutting-edge performances.
Functional Coatings
Coatings offer more than just aesthetics and by tuning CYPRIS structural color copolymer, ultraviolet light or near infrared light can be reflected to add fade protection, heat control, LiDAR visibility, and more.

Multiple Applications
01
Screen Printing
CYPRIS structural color UV inks can be applied using flat bed and rotary screen and cured immediately after application with no impact on press speed.
02
Spray Application
CYPRIS structural color coatings can be applied using pneumatic spray and rotary bell. Unlike pearl pigment and aluminum flake, the appearance is not impacted by electrostatic application.
03
Digital Printing
CYPRIS structural color inks are particle free making them uniquely suitable to create special effect colors with industrial inkjet application, an important benefit to support greater adoption of digital printing.
Our Team
Meet the Color Experts
Cypris Materials, Inc. was spun out April 2019, in Berkeley, CA after co-founders Dr. Ryan Pearson and Dr. Matthew Ryan were awarded Cyclotron Road (now Activate) Fellowships at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The core technology was first invented at the California Institute Technology laboratory of late co-founder and Nobel Laureate Prof. Robert Grubbs. Prior to the founding of Cypris Materials, a $5M grant from the Department of Energy’s ARPA-E OPEN award seeded the initial technology development with the goal of developing paintable reflective coatings to reduce heat (via near-infrared reflection) intake in buildings.
